There is a reason that I am posting these 2 songs together here. “12 Steps” and “New” are both songs about faith and renewal. They are songs about not giving up in ones quest to truly clear out that which will destroy, and becoming a better person as a result. I guess you could say that “12 Steps” is more in reference to the journey, and “New” is regarding the desired goal, the hopeful resolution to the journey. But both these songs, in essence, are about finding the strength to hold on to the belief that, even with all the battles fought and lost, one can ultimately win the war. And that is hope.
These songs are dedicated to all those who fight their personal demons every single day. They are for those who do believe that, with the help of a higher power, people can change. People can improve. People can become new.
(You will notice that the end of the song “New” has some background vocals that I added later. Other than this addition, the song is a live acoustic recording.)

12 STEPS
Treyan Porter
I’ve been lost, and like a book on the shelf
My soul’s been gathering dust
And I can see these cords around me now
Become chains and I am dragging
My pride has got me stuck here again
Where all my demons are closing in
It may be hard to tell, looking at me here
Looking down this road, but I’m scared as hell
This is war now, spirit and body count
Are rising, got to stop the bleeding
I’m tired of dragging this bag of bones and
At the end, I need a beginning
Got to take the stage now, or find the exit out
‘Cause its time for living or dying
A few steps, but its miles away
And I can’t erase me from yesterday
But I can dig, I can scratch, through the black and the blood
Of my past, and turn it over
Now hold on, I’m coming up for air
I got my fears and my guilt right here
Close my eyes, drop to my knees
And hand it over
This is war now, spirit and body count
Are rising, got to stop the bleeding
I’m tired of dragging this bag of bones and
At the end, I need a beginning
Got to take the stage now, or find the exit out
‘Cause its time for living or dying
This is war now, spirit and body now
Are rising, we stopped the bleeding
And now I’m dropping this bag of bones
At the end, I found a beginning
Got to take the stage now, or find the exit out
‘Cause its time for living or dying

NEW
Treyan Porter
Lift up yourself
Look around you now
Do you see?
There are no shadows here
These stones have moved
This ground is new
And in this glass
I don’t see that old reflection of you
It’s been so long ago since you
Felt anything but used
Now here you are brand new
All these years and those maddening dreams
All these rusted memories
All those cracks in your soul
Not there anymore
Not there anymore
Lift up yourself
Look around you now
Do you see?
There are no shadows here
These stones have moved
This ground is new
And in this glass
I don’t see that old reflection of you
I don’t see that old reflection of you
I don’t see that old reflection of you
I don’t see that old reflection of you
